The movie takes some chances with its visuals and overall style, but ultimately falls short because the characters aren’t well-developed and the plot feels disjointed. It's nice to see cinema combined with opera, an art form I consider to be incredibly complete and versatile. While this film isn’t about opera itself and has flaws, Wilhelmenia Fernandez’s singing voice is a genuine pleasure to hear. The writing could have been stronger, though; there are some rough spots that needed more work. Jean-Jacques Beineix delivers a stylized presentation with moments of artistic merit, but the story he tells suffers from issues: it begins with an admirer's strange fixation on an opera singer. After taking the dress she wore onstage, he befriends a young Vietnamese woman who steals records. Soon after, their lives become entangled with a group of killers posing as police officers and targeting people in public places. Eventually, the singer meets her fan and they form a connection. Essentially, there are two separate storylines attempting to merge into one cohesive narrative. The problem is that they don't quite mesh; they feel too dissimilar and both vie for attention. It simply doesn’t come together! Aside from the opera singer, the other characters lack depth, fail to evoke any real feeling, or seem underdeveloped. Their actions and choices also often appear illogical—even the singer seems oblivious to the fact that her voice has been recorded without permission, something she previously opposed, and suddenly enjoys having a devoted fan. What does this film do well? The visual style and aesthetics are appealing. The cinematography demonstrates skill in its use of light, shadow, and composition, and there’s some originality in the editing techniques. I appreciated Wilhelmenia Fernandez's performance, as mentioned before, and Frédéric Andréi seemed to try his best given the poor script and a lack of charisma among the cast. However, the rest of the actors are disappointing. It’s worth noting that this was Dominique Pinon’s debut film; he would later become one of France’s finest actors.
