I wasn't expecting much from a film centered around a Taiwanese gangster attempting to obtain an illicit recording of an opera singer—the concept seemed pretty far-fetched—but it turned out to be surprisingly good. However, there are significant problems that prevent me from recommending it more enthusiastically. One concern is the subplot involving the opera singer, Cynthia, and a young postal worker, Jules, who comes across as a stalker (and even took her dress after one show). An even larger problem arises with a character whose heroic qualities are overshadowed by the fact that he has a teenage girl living with him; while a sexual relationship isn't explicitly depicted, it’s heavily suggested. I understand this is set in France during the early 1980s, but it was still disturbing. Despite these issues, there are some enjoyable moments, including an exciting chase sequence through Paris and the Metro system. Strangely enough, the connection between Jules and Cynthia remains compelling even considering how their relationship began. The film also features lovely cinematography with several striking visuals. **3.5/5**
