It’s an excellent film that I would gladly view again and enthusiastically suggest to others. The story begins with a captivating concept: extraterrestrial refugees arriving on Earth, and how both humans and these newcomers respond. However, the way this idea is presented has some peculiar inconsistencies; it's stated that the entire crew perished under mysterious circumstances, no one possesses the knowledge to operate the spacecraft, yet it remains airborne for an extended period. The simple force of gravity should have been enough reason for Johannesburg to evacuate, but their interactions with the government seem surprisingly ineffective. A benefit of locating the narrative in South Africa, especially for viewers in America, is that it’s a highly capitalistic society where English is predominantly spoken—it's comparable to setting the story in Mexico and substituting Mexican cartels for Nigerian gangs. If you accept that an incident report hasn't been obtained, the ship can’t be moved, and none of the aliens are able to operate it, then the core idea requires one alien to possess the necessary knowledge. One might expect he would simply communicate with someone and secure his people’s departure from the planet, but given that he’s intelligent enough to have been acting in a certain way for two decades, he understands the importance of not trusting anyone. This self-centered approach is essential for understanding the characters' actions moving forward. The writing quality is superb, complemented by impressive visual effects and strong performances. As Vickis undergoes his transformation, it raises many philosophical questions about what defines a person, human being, alien, citizen, or government agent. At times, it also feels like a gangster/heist film rather than an escape from oppressive authority. If you’re concerned about the more profound themes explored, rest assured that the movie delivers plenty of explosions, gunfire, and science fiction action. It's also filled with some amusing clichés that serve the story's purpose, although there are moments where I found myself questioning things. The motivations don’t quite add up unless you remember that everyone—even the main characters—is driven by self-interest; it’s about what they can gain for themselves, even when collaborating, and the contrast is that cooperation is ultimately required to achieve anything. Overall, this is a truly great film, and if you enjoy science fiction and aren't bothered by the South African setting ("Chappie" is another example), I highly recommend checking it out.
