It’s surprisingly inventive and generally enjoyable for younger viewers. (7/10) I didn’t have high hopes going in, considering it's both a sequel and skipped theaters entirely. The initial portion, roughly the first twenty minutes, felt like what you’d expect from a standard sitcom continuation: the family relocates to the suburbs, the teenage daughter is desperate to return to their former life, and her mother unintentionally makes things awkward for her on her first day—the usual tropes. I was prepared for something pretty average. However, I did find myself pleasantly surprised as the film progressed into its more fantastical elements. While the characters aren’t deeply explored, a particular development concerning Giselle was unexpected, and there are several well-placed references to previous Disney films and subtle hints of what's to come. The musical performances vary from acceptable to quite good, but one jazzy song in particular really stood out. (Those who have seen it will know exactly which one I mean.) Regrettably, the unique aspects fade away around the third act, when the story devolves into a fairly standard fairy-tale adventure for children. It’s all about averting disaster before midnight and facing off against the primary antagonist—the usual formula. Despite this, the movie does offer some interesting concepts, and it's probably worth watching, especially since you don’t have to purchase tickets. I would say *Disenchanted* is comparable to the original *Enchanted*; neither one is significantly better or worse; they simply are what they are.
