Don’t anticipate hearing any Bee Gees or Donna Summer tracks because this film doesn't feature much disco music at all in its narrative about "Alex" (Franz Rogowski). He and his companion "Mikhail" (Michal Balicki) devise a scheme to travel from Belarus to Poland, then on to France, with the hope of eventually obtaining citizenship by enlisting in the Foreign Legion. Things don't unfold exactly as they intended; instead, he winds up at boot camp and is slated for a mission to Niger. It’s there that the local "MEND" militia are insisting that oil companies cease their careless destruction of the delta, which has resulted in death, devastation, and pollution. A violent clash with local leader "Jomo" (Morr Ndiaye) during a river encounter significantly impacts the soldier, something he must grapple with upon returning to Paris and meeting the mysterious dancer "Udoka" (Laetitia Ky)—who seems equally connected to his past experiences as she is to his current life. The story feels like an unfinished chapter in his existence; it's the cinematography that elevates the experience. Night-vision imagery, particularly within the jungle environment, proves effective, and the depiction of environmental damage – oil spills everywhere, ruined or destroyed pipelines – resonates strongly. That feeling of intrusive industrial expansion is subtly conveyed as "Alex" and his fellow soldiers are primarily focused on survival. There isn’t a lot of conversation—neither expected nor necessary—and this suits Rogowski's acting style; he often seems detached and present only in part. The film possesses a somewhat dreamlike quality, and while it may occasionally wander or repeat itself, it remains a captivating blend of political commentary and emotional exploration, making it worthwhile to view.
