I’ve been thinking about re-evaluating Clint Eastwood’s career, both behind and in front of the camera, largely due to his repeated support for conservative viewpoints that display racial prejudice. However, given the impact his films have had on me as a movie lover, and out of respect for everyone who contributed to this film—especially director Don Siegel—it wouldn't be right to do so. This film, condensed into its 103-minute running time, presents the central problem facing the United States nearly half a century later: whose rights take precedence—those of the “good” or the “bad”? If these rights are considered equal, what implications does that have for law enforcement and the courts? Without question, it’s the most important American film made in the last 50 years. It might not be my personal favorite—that would be '2001: A Space Odyssey'—but its significance is undeniable. Remarkably, it feels as relevant today as it did when it was first released.
