Reno on Dirty Grandpa

3/10 · Jun 4, 2016

It’s the same old thing, nothing fresh or exciting about it! I want to stress that everything I've said here is just my personal view, and I certainly didn’t mean for anyone to be upset by it. This had the potential to be among the best comedies of the year, but now it feels like one of the worst. Instead, I would suggest watching 'Grandma', which I thought was a much stronger comedy. Robert De Niro was fantastic at his age, although his character really needed some solid support from another actor, and that’s where Zac typically falls short. I think someone like Taylor Lautner, who's clearly looking for something to launch him, would have been better than Zac, who seems to consistently disappoint. The script came from the ‘blacklist’, so they should have taken extra care with casting. The story itself wasn't bad; it wasn’t intended to be a masterpiece anyway. It felt like a weekend trip or a bachelor party kind of movie, but then the film tries to explain its own purpose and those plot developments just seemed too familiar if you’ve seen many teen movies about parties. It should have been funny, but there were a lot of jokes that feel old-fashioned, awkwardly trying to be different. The grandfather-grandson relationship was a great concept; the main story centered around them, and it probably should have stayed that way, but the romance felt out of place. Or they could have developed that romantic storyline better to make the genre more balanced. It might have been acceptable if it had been marketed as a teen movie. A lot of the actors seemed too old for their roles. That’s okay, because movies are artificial – everything is about makeup and acting – but most of them weren't performing well except for De Niro and Aubrey Plaza. I would advise skipping this film; that’s my take on it, though some people seem to like it, so keep in mind that I'm not always correct and they aren’t always wrong if you are considering watching it. 3/10
