George Cukor’s finest works include Dinner at Eight, which stands as an outstanding film from the Pre-Code period and showcases the considerable abilities of Marie Dressler, Wallace Beery, the Barrymore brothers—Lionel and John—Jean Harlow, Billie Burke, and several other performers. The movie features a quirky narrative that shifts between dramatic and comedic moments, centering on a frivolous hostess who organizes a lavish dinner party for a wealthy British couple who ultimately don’t appear. As the film unfolds, we meet each of the guests, along with the hosts, and by the end, it becomes clear why everyone decided to accept or decline the invitation, with glimpses into their personal lives and circumstances. Would I suggest seeing this? Certainly, but be aware that it isn't a fast-paced, overtly comedic film.
