Jennifer Lawrence plays “Grace” and Robert Pattinson is “Jackson,” a couple who move into a secluded Montana house that once belonged to his uncle. Initially, she isn't thrilled with the location, but their strong relationship leads them quickly to wanting to start a family. However, when Grace becomes a mother, the isolation starts to take its toll. With Jackson frequently away for work, she finds herself restless and drawn to their neighbor, “Karl” (LaKeith Stanfield), who rides a motorcycle and is married. Following the birth, what seems like postpartum issues arise, and neither her partner nor his mother, "Pam" (Sissy Spacek)—who has dealt with difficult experiences related to her deceased husband (Nick Nolte)—can understand Grace's increasingly strange behavior, which often revolves around sexuality. The situation isn’t helped by Jackson losing interest in the physical intimacy of their relationship, creating a growing distance between them. Is there anything positive for this couple? Do they even care? This film really showcases Lawrence, who delivers a remarkably unrestrained performance. She effectively embodies her character, conveying feelings of confusion and boredom, as well as sexuality and desire, though these qualities are somewhat undermined by Spacek’s infrequent appearances. Pattinson, however, feels as stiff as the house's wooden features, and I wasn’t sure if he was cast because he isn't a particularly engaging actor—perhaps to keep the focus on Grace—or whether he was intended to bring more depth than he does, but simply failed. The film touches upon aspects of mental illness, but it lacks background information or scientific explanation to help viewers understand the extent to which she might be genuinely unwell or just seeking attention. If it’s the latter, what caused their relationship to fall apart? It feels like a hazy film—intentionally so, I suppose, with some plot points being clear, others vague, and still others missing entirely. But I found this emotional uncertainty increasingly tedious as the story unfolds without any discernible direction. Maybe I just didn't connect with it, but I didn’t find much value in this remarkably empty narrative.
