RalphRahal on Die Hard: With a Vengeance

7/10 · Feb 2, 2025

While Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) proves to be an improvement over the second film, it doesn't quite manage to replicate what made the original so special. The narrative immediately plunges McClane into a citywide challenge, which maintains a brisk tempo but results in everything feeling more manufactured than authentic. Rather than fostering suspense, the movie moves rapidly from one event to another, creating an impression that the characters are simply following instructions without any real thought. There are some genuinely enjoyable exchanges between Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson; their interactions really help propel the story forward. However, the broader storyline comes across as a carefully planned exercise rather than a spontaneous struggle for survival, which diminishes the feeling of suspense. John McTiernan’s direction is competent, and the visuals effectively utilize the New York backdrop, but the action sequences don't achieve the level of intensity they should. Jeremy Irons delivers an adequate performance as the antagonist, though he doesn't possess the same commanding presence or influence as Hans Gruber, so the central conflict feels less significant on a personal level. The musical score and sound design contribute to maintaining a lively atmosphere, but they largely stick to conventional action movie tropes. Although it’s a stronger sequel, it still falls short of the initial film's inherent tension and inventiveness. It provides entertainment, yet resembles an elaborate puzzle more than a desperate fight for life.
