There’s simply no question; this is the absolute worst theme song associated with a James Bond movie, and it unfortunately signals what might be the weakest installment in the series as well. The promotional material includes that familiar image of Halle Berry emerging from the water, but beyond that, there's almost nothing at all to stick with you about this lengthy and wandering spy story. I personally think Pierce Brosnan is a more appealing "007" than Timothy Dalton was, although even he seems unable to gain traction with this particularly absurd, and quite violent, storyline. The film initially gets off to an encouraging start, featuring a thrilling opening sequence where the hero is trapped in a Korean prison, seemingly deserted by everyone. It's only through a prisoner swap that he regains his freedom, and then, involving diamond smugglers and some sword fighting with what feels like the least threatening villain this franchise has ever seen – "Gustav Graves" (Toby Stephens) – we move toward an ending set in a snowy Arctic landscape. The earlier films incorporated characters like “M,” “Q,” and “Moneypenny” as supporting players to the lead and his persona. Here, those roles seem to be expanded to reflect the actors’ prominence. Judi Dench is acceptable, but honestly – what's John Cleese doing in this? Is he getting paid for another divorce settlement? Rosamund Pike doesn’t really impress me in films, and she fails to convey any sense of danger—a responsibility that falls entirely on Rick Yune’s impressively tough "Zhao." Of course, there are gadgets – including a clever Aston Martin with an invisibility feature. If I had possessed one while seeing this movie in theaters, I might have used it to sneak out. It's definitely time for something different.
