Pierce Brosnan’s portrayal of Agent 007 sends him to North Korea where he looks into a colonel who is illegally trading weapons for African blood diamonds. The investigation then moves from Hong Kong to Cuba, where Bond encounters Jinx (Halle Berry), and leads him to infiltrate a gene therapy clinic located in a fortified compound off the coast. Following this, there’s an exciting fencing duel at an exclusive London club with the primary antagonist (Toby Stephens). The story concludes with scenes set in an impressive ice palace in Iceland before returning to Korea. Rick Yune appears as the secondary villain, Zao. "Die Another Day," released in 2002, marked Pierce Brosnan’s fourth and final appearance as James Bond, and it possesses a level of energy that surpasses his other three films. Its exaggerated style has drawn criticism, but this is ultimately what distinguishes it from the earlier installments, which felt somewhat subdued and are easily overlooked, even though they were enjoyable enough. The antagonists in this film are more distinctive, and the female characters are perfectly adequate. For me, the most memorable aspect of the movie is the elaborate sword fight at the estate; while it's excessively theatrical to the point of being silly, it might just be the finest sword fight ever filmed. The latter portion of the story, primarily set in Iceland, also features several impressive action sequences, which are even more outlandish than the sword fight, such as the iceberg tsunami that Bond rides (Why not!). However, this isn't the first time a Bond film has included an absurd action scene—remember the “Bat Boat” from the beginning of "The World is Not Enough"? When I initially saw Brosnan, my immediate thought was, "He would be excellent as Bond,” and indeed he is; but his portrayal represents a different kind of Bond than those played by Connery or Moore, and it requires some adjustment. Madonna performs the title song and makes an appearance in the film. The movie has a running time of 2 hours and 13 minutes and was filmed in Maui, Hawaii (the opening surfing scene); England (standing in for Korea); Andalucía, Spain (representing Cuba); Austurland, Iceland; and Norway (for the car chase and ice palace settings). GRADE: B+/A-
