Ferzen Özpetek gathers a group of potential actors, offering them a lavish meal and wine before presenting them with a script for his new project. The narrative focuses on a fashion house specializing in costumes for film stars, managed by sisters Alberta (Luisa Ranieri) and Gabriella (Jasmine Trinca). Alberta is portrayed as meticulous and demanding, while Gabriella seems preoccupied, often seen with a drink in her hand. When award-winning designer Bianca (Vanessa Scalera) arrives with an ambitious design request, the team of seamstresses must not only realize her imaginative visions but also contribute their own ideas to support a woman experiencing self-doubt. From this point on, we witness how these women navigate the challenges while simultaneously addressing personal issues like childcare difficulties, homelessness, and domestic violence, all against the backdrop of the evolving relationship between the sisters, who are clearly confronting something—but in strikingly different ways. The setting within this vibrant and bustling environment proves effective, enabling a diverse set of storylines to unfold, some more serious than others, and allowing many of the actors opportunities to shine. There’s a significant amount of sharp, realistic humor present; moments of nervousness from those considered “stars”; and a revealing look at the considerable effort involved in period dramas, something we often overlook when another adaptation of Jane Austen or a film like "Devil Wears Prada/Balenciaga/Gucci/Versace" appears. Ultimately, it's a story about female collaboration, camaraderie, and loyalty—but also about women who know how to appreciate (and playfully tease) the young deliverymen who are often awkward when encountering women of their mothers’ generation flirting with them. Even within the film's most glamorous scenes, I found myself questioning who would actually wear that red dress at the conclusion. It resembles "House of Eliot," but with more humor and a heightened sense of drama.
