The pool holds keys, the husband is gone—it seems this household has an obsession with water! Michel Delaselle (Paul Meurisse), the headmaster of a private school, is a harsh and unpleasant man. His wife and his lover decide they’ve had enough and plan to get rid of him. However, after they commit the act, his body vanishes, and reports of sightings only increase their anxiety. This sets the stage for director Henri-Georges Clouzot's exceptional thriller. The film moves at a deliberately slow pace, carefully increasing tension and playing with what the viewer anticipates. A strong feeling of unease permeates everything. It’s wonderful to see a suspense movie take its time developing the story—something I doubt today’s younger audiences would tolerate for even half an hour. Armand Thirard's cinematography creates a disturbing atmosphere that builds until the final fifteen minutes, when your nerves are already stretched thin. Then comes what is likely the most memorable bath scene in cinema history, and "that" conclusion... I initially saw it on a low-quality DVD back in 2008, but even watching it now on Blu-ray, it still has a powerful effect, leaving me needing to find some sunshine afterward. The script is excellent, the direction superb, and the acting is outstanding, especially thanks to Simone Signoret’s intensely sensual portrayal and Véra Clouzot's genuine emotional depth. It stands as one of European cinema’s most effective scary movies. If you haven't experienced it yet, follow my example: buy the Blu-ray, dim the lights, light a few candles, perhaps enjoy a strong drink or two, and watch it by yourself... 9/10
