With these Scott Adkins direct-to-video movies, I generally have a good idea of what’s coming: decent to really strong action scenes combined with a pretty standard and predictable plot. Occasionally, though, one of these films turns out to be surprisingly good, and DIABLO is the latest example of that. Adkins delivers his typical performance; it's not bad, but it’s also nothing special. However, as we’ve seen before, he can be quite effective when given solid material like in *Jawbone* or *Avengement*. Marko Zaror, though, is the standout here—he really steals the show. He portrays a genuinely frightening and intimidating slasher villain while also showing off some great comedic timing. The fight sequences are among the best work from both actors, not just in terms of martial arts choreography but also in the larger action setpieces and gun battles. Zaror’s performance as a slasher villain during a *RoboCop*-style shootout is particularly memorable. Still, there's a clear change in feel when the movie moves between calmer moments and the action sequences. I will say that this issue lessens later on. The quieter parts in the first half made the film feel somewhat sluggish and disconnected. Fortunately, once things really get going and Adkins’ and Zaror’s characters finally come face to face, the movie just blasts you with entertainment, making up for a lot of its shortcomings.
