It’s reminiscent of "Dheepan," launching straight into intense circumstances! The story centers on Jesuthasan Anthonythasan, portraying a Tamil who was involved in Sri Lanka's separatist movement and is now confronting the reality that their fight has failed. Driven by fear of being harmed, he makes the decision to go to France so he can request asylum. During his journey, he meets Kalieaswari Srinivasan as "Yalini" and Claudine Visasithamby playing "Illayaal," and they decide it would be best if they pretended to be a family in order to find refuge. Surprisingly, their inability to speak French or possess official documents doesn't appear to stop them from getting into France; however, what they receive for their trouble is a caretaker position in an apartment building located within a dangerous Parisian suburb where there’s very little sign of police presence and the streets are controlled by groups of young men who carry weapons. His role as the janitor seems to offer him and his family some protection from what can only be described as violence spilling over from other regions, and he's certainly not someone who backs down from a challenge. As tensions escalate and become increasingly violent, it’s clear that their vulnerable situation is building toward a dramatic climax. The performances of the two main actors are noteworthy; they effectively convey their characters’ struggles to stay alive, protect the young girl, and pursue a better life. It also provides a disturbing glimpse into some French communities that have been neglected by the government for quite some time. The subtitles don't fully capture Jacques Audiard's collaborative screenplay, but it becomes obvious when we witness scenes of brutality, blood, and gunfire. Would they have perhaps been safer if they’d remained where they were? It's unsettling—and remarkably believable.
