Glen Powell returns as a pilot in this serviceable film honoring two men who flew during the Korean conflict. He portrays Tom Hudner, partnered with Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors), who became his wingman. They entered the US Navy roughly concurrently, and their connection felt nearly like a brotherhood while they went through training and faced actual combat side by side. It’s during one particular mission that this friendship faces an intense challenge... The movie is competently made and visually appealing, showing how reliant these men were on each other and the machines they operated. It also highlights the perils of war, even for those flying high in the air, and manages to do so effectively. However, the performances feel somewhat restrained; there wasn't much spark between the actors. The script is acceptable, and the aerial sequences are impressive, but that feeling of camaraderie just isn’t quite there. Historical accounts confirm this, and like many stories set during wartime, it underscores the idea that prejudice has no place in anyone's life. It avoids the overly enthusiastic tone common to films of this type, which is a positive aspect – I simply wish different actors had been chosen.
