It’s unfortunate that Devotion faced competition from another well-known movie about aviators this year, but it distinguishes itself through a more realistic and serious tone. Devotion centers on the story of Jessie Brown, the first Black aviator, portrayed by Jonathan Majors, and his relationship with fellow pilot Tom Hudner, played by Glen Powell. Initially, they seem to be assessing each other’s character. Eventually, the two develop an exceptionally authentic connection as they navigate the challenges of war and the racism that Brown constantly confronts. The core relationship in this film was particularly effective; Majors and Powell had remarkable chemistry together. Hudner seems genuinely intent on being a good person and supporting Brown, but his lack of awareness prevents him from realizing that his actions sometimes create more problems than they solve. The movie does an admirable job showing the complexities of racism, both historical instances and issues that persist today. This is presented subtly and serves as a backdrop to the film’s central emotional narrative. I'd contend that the action sequences in this film are nearly as compelling as those in Top Gun: Maverick. Nearly every action scene involves combat with enemy fighters and anti-aircraft defenses, rather than training exercises or montages. This creates a more suspenseful experience because the main characters could be shot down or killed at any moment. The high stakes combined with impressive visuals made for a truly captivating action sequence. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It strikes a good balance between action and drama, concluding in a way that genuinely moved me. Score: 79% Verdict: Great
