Going into this film, I didn’t know anything about the events it portrays, so perhaps my assessment won’t be as critical as some viewers’. What stood out to me was the initial portion of the movie preceding the boys' disappearance; Reese Witherspoon delivered a compelling performance as the mother struggling with grief. Her portrayal significantly enhanced my enjoyment, possibly more than it should have. Though there were questions about whether her role warranted so much screen time, it ultimately fostered greater empathy and a desire for justice on her behalf. That particular scene where she pulls at her hair was quite impactful. The closing scenes suggest that the case involved far more complexities than what was shown onscreen. Colin Firth’s performance didn't resonate with me as strongly; I would have appreciated seeing more insight into his character and understanding his motivations better. He seemed to function primarily as an observer. This also applies to the three suspects, who received less attention than I had hoped for. Initially, it appeared that the police were pursuing the correct individuals, particularly given a confession from one of them, but the film gradually criticized the police force due to their failure to thoroughly investigate other leads and their mishandling of evidence, with some items being claimed as lost. Was this attributable to negligence or lack of skill? The movie didn’t portray the police entirely negatively, but it did offer a subtle critique. Despite my reservations, I found the film suspenseful at times, and its cinematography was quite good. It unfolds at a deliberate pace, yet I wasn't bored during the courtroom sequences. 6/10
