Following a fire that claims the lives of her mother and boyfriend, a young woman (Rose McGowan) finds herself living with her grandmother in the Los Angeles region. She then enrolls at a new school where she becomes fixated on the creative writing instructor (Alex McArthur), who is already committed to another person (Sherrie Rose). “Devil in the Flesh” (1998), also credited as “Dearly Devoted,” shares similarities with other movies that explore dangerous relationships between young women and older men, such as "Poison Ivy" (1992) and “The Crush” (1993), along with earlier films like "Summer Girl" (1983) and "The Babysitter" (1980). It’s essentially a reimagining of “Fatal Attraction” (1987), but with a teenage protagonist. This film distinguishes itself through certain details, so it isn't simply a duplicate. Initially, the movie shows promise with its artistic presentation; I had hoped for something akin to "Poison Ivy," but ultimately the narrative becomes fairly ordinary, focusing on the captivating influence of an attractive young woman and the infatuation of a teenager. The strongest element is McGowan’s performance—she was 24 years old when filming took place—though there are other enjoyable aspects, including a memorable rock soundtrack with music from several unknown bands of the nineties.
