I really should have checked who was in it before spending £7.50 to see this film at the cinema. I likely would’ve been less shocked by how bad it turned out to be if I had. It's a strange mix, feeling like "Star Trek V" from 1989 with elements of "Stargate SG-1" mixed in. The story focuses on a group of astronauts who are dispatched to look into an odd sphere circling around Earth—a planet struggling with overpopulation—and sending out a coded message that hints it could actually be God! Richard Blackwood, known from MTV, captains the ship, and it quickly becomes apparent that something isn’t right. To figure things out, they bring in Claudia Black "Karla" and her strong companion "Ulph" (David O'Hara), who are sent to investigate, and naturally, everything falls apart. Overseeing their inquiry is their incredibly wealthy boss "Vance" (Phil Davis wearing a notably unkempt flannel shirt and blazer) who doesn’t contribute any real threat to the story. I never got over Black ruining what had been an enjoyable sci-fi series in “SG-1,” because she's a stiff and forgettable actress, and that’s exactly what she is here too. It’s true that the dialogue isn’t much better, and O'Hara only seems to have one acting style, which does the job but doesn’t stretch him at all. The storyline is weak, and the characters feel underdeveloped as the story slowly progresses. The special effects are easily the highlight of this unoriginal television movie, which I doubt anyone will remember in a week.
