It seems that appreciating this film noir requires an initial acceptance of its substandard performances. The acting is quite poor; Tom Neal appears unconvincingly weak, Ann Savage is genuinely irritating, and Claudia Drake delivers a remarkably stiff performance, making the experience one where you might deserve recognition simply for seeing it through. The story follows Tom Neal as he drives across the country, making a choice he’ll later regret – giving a ride to an impolite and aggressive woman (Ann Savage) who then proceeds to rob, intimidate, and extort him. When she unexpectedly meets an unfortunate end, his sense of relief is obvious, much like the audience's feeling of gratitude. The story unfolds through his somewhat pitiful narration looking back on events, alongside her constant attacks, which together become wearing after a while—roughly around 20 minutes. There’s not much to recommend it; both the cinematography and the writing fail to create any real momentum or suspense – it’s simply a tedious rant.
