Following the disappearance of young Nga, her aunt Miss Moon is unable to persuade the police to act, so she sends a letter requesting help from detective Kiên, a respected judge’s investigator. Upon his arrival and display of official credentials, he immediately creates tension within the close-knit community, where several people could be involved. The situation is complicated further by the village's past—a local legend speaks of a river ghost that once terrorized residents, leaving behind a trail of bodies. Kiên, a man who relies on logic, finds himself working alongside an eager new partner as they uncover secrets and realize that no one in the village is what they appear to be. With numerous suspects including the chief, his family, the potter, the shaman, and others, uncovering the truth proves challenging. While I felt the film’s presentation was somewhat impersonal, there's a pleasant rapport between the detectives, and the narrative moves along at a good pace thanks to numerous falsehoods, misdirection, and hidden motives, leading to an elaborate, chaotic resolution that leaves you wanting more. The story begins quickly and maintains its momentum for roughly two hours, evoking similarities to “Vienna Blood.” It’s worth seeing.
