Brian Donlevy, portraying "Kent," and Marlene Dietrich as "Frenchy" essentially control Bottle Neck. The townspeople gather at their saloon to relax and enjoy her musical performances. Above the saloon, "Kent" operates a dishonest poker game, swindling “Claggett” out of his ranch; he then seeks help from the sheriff, who promises assistance, only for the town drunk to be given new responsibilities! This sheriff, "Dimsdale" (Charles Winninger), having previously worked with the original "Destry," aims to permanently restore order and requests the arrival of Destry’s son, “Tom” (James Stewart). The townsfolk are surprised by the stylish newcomer who arrives without a weapon. Initial assumptions suggest he will be ineffective, but there's more than one approach to resolving a situation—as it turns out. James Stewart delivers a well-received and understated performance in this considerably more pleasant western. He complements Marlene Dietrich’s captivating presence, whose face shines on screen, and whose voice, singing lines like "See what the boys in the backroom..." and "Little Joe," possesses that distinctive quality that enthralls the audience. The supporting actors are all quite good, and while the ending feels somewhat hurried, it inevitably arrives as it must, something Emmeline Pankhurst would likely have applauded.
