"Despicable Me 4" returns with the Minions causing mischief once more, but this sequel feels phoned in, prioritizing flash over meaningful content to a noticeable degree. There’s not much to praise beyond the impressive technical execution—the animation is visually striking and the direction surpasses what's typically expected from an animated feature—leaving it feeling like little more than disposable entertainment for children rather than a creative or engaging story. Gru, formerly a supervillain, now enjoys domestic bliss with his wife Lucy, daughters Margo, Edith, Agnes, and their new baby, Gru Jr., who presents quite the challenge. Their tranquil existence is disrupted when the villainous Maxime Le Mal and his partner Valentina break out of prison, targeting Gru as their next adversary. This prompts the family to flee and adopt disguises in a suburban setting. The storyline seems promising with its “fish-out-of-water” premise, but ultimately falls flat. The film jumps between a weak narrative and silly Minion antics that might appeal to both children and adults, though few elements truly succeed. A simplistic plot wanders through uninspired events and predictable character development, never quite establishing a solid foundation. Simply put, the movie lacks substance. The introduction of the Mega Minions offers some fleeting amusement, but quickly loses its charm (it's easy to imagine these characters leading to another disappointing spin-off). The rest feels like superficial distractions as the film struggles to maintain any real energy. While it remains consistent with the established "Despicable Me" formula, it also highlights the limitations of these characters and their world. There’s nothing fresh or inventive here. “Despicable Me 4” is ultimately a lackluster effort, which is disappointing considering how well-made it is from a technical standpoint.
