I liked this movie a lot, but I honestly believe “Adorable Me” would have been a more fitting title because "Gru" doesn't come across as particularly despicable at all. When he joins the “Anti-Villain League” to work as a sort of informant, he’s basically the perfect dad with his three children, his large group of laughing Minions, and even a possible romantic connection with agent “Lucy.” He hasn't completely lost his skills, though, and quickly starts tracking "El Macho." The character Arnie turns out to be more like an enchilada vendor who makes his own sauces – but does he possess an even bigger secret that could make the ever-faithful Minions turn against "Gru," perhaps even changing their color to purple? With everything set up, and lead agent “Ramsbottom” (or “Sheepsbutt”) certain that "Gru" wouldn't be able to locate anything in the desert, he now has to demonstrate that he can still save the day, his kids, the Minions, and maybe even win over the girl. I think "Gru" is my favorite animated character to come out of computer-generated animation. He gives off a certain pleasant sense of danger that I find appealing, and while I would have preferred them to write something closer to “Darth Vader” than “John Boy Walton” for him this time around, I still appreciate the facial expressions and Steve Carell’s voice acting. Regarding the audio, the Minions' giggling is also entertaining, mixed with occasional recognizable words within their nonsense language. They are definitely what save this film, and perhaps even the whole series, as their antics—often completely unnecessary to the story and intended more for adult viewers—are responsible for most of the laughs here. It’s not quite as clever as the first movie, but considering it's a sequel, the French comic book and artistic influences help maintain its unique feel.
