Roberta, played by Rosanna Arquette, is a discontented housewife living near New York City who develops an intense fascination with Susan, portrayed by Madonna, after seeing personal advertisements. Roberta begins to imitate Susan’s lifestyle when she travels into Manhattan, and the situation becomes complicated because a criminal (Will Patton) is pursuing Susan for valuable Egyptian earrings. Mark Blum appears as Roberta's unpleasant husband, while Aidan Quinn takes on the role of a new acquaintance Roberta makes in the city. "Desperately Seeking Susan," released in 1985, presents an unusual story centered around mistaken identity and has some amusing qualities. It also offers a glimpse into what New York City was like during the mid-1980s. Whether someone enjoys it will likely depend on their feelings about Arquette's performance; she’s charming, but I don’t feel strongly either way about her acting. Madonna is more captivating in a smaller part, although I’m not particularly fond of her work generally—though there are a few moments that highlight her appeal. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 43 minutes and was filmed in Manhattan, Manhasset on Long Island, and Atlantic City. GRADE: B-
