It requires a bit of thought and reflection to really understand this movie. On its surface, it’s a fairly standard action-thriller with an unusual and captivating environment. The story features heroes and morally ambiguous characters, immersing viewers in a completely fabricated world that most will find unfamiliar. If you can maintain enough detachment to see it as pure fiction, the film is reasonably effective, even if the plot follows a familiar pattern we’ve encountered before. (A character encounters an animal, rescues the animal, then must repeatedly save the animal again and again.) However, the movie also attempts to offer a not-so-subtle political and philosophical critique of present-day conflicts in the United States and its neighboring country to the south. In this area, however, the film’s approach is heavy-handed, utilizing characters that are simplistic and underdeveloped, who often reveal their positions too quickly. It doesn't seem likely to sway anyone (if that was the goal) or it might simply strengthen existing beliefs (if the intention was to create comfortable ideological spaces). I believe this movie could have been quite successful under different circumstances, but given the present historical moment—the period for which it was clearly created and financed—it doesn’t quite succeed. My suggestion would be to view it if you can set aside your personal beliefs, become absorbed in the story, and appreciate it as an action-thriller. Otherwise, you're likely to feel frustrated regardless of where you stand politically. (3/5)
