Coming from a lesbian perspective, I felt immense appreciation when someone suggested this film to me about twelve years ago; I was a young teenager just beginning to understand my feelings for other women but not ready to share it openly. I’ll be honest, I had difficulty maintaining focus through the deliberately paced narrative—likely because of my teenage impatience. However, I persevered and found that it was absolutely worth investing the time! While there's a fairly explicit erotic scene between two women, the film offers so much more than just that; it provides a compelling look at the characters and culminates in an ultimately positive ending. I’ve watched many lesbian romance films since then—including "Below Her Mouth" and "Blue Is the Warmest Color," which were both exceptionally crafted. Nevertheless, “Desert Hearts” remains for me a particularly moving and sensitively portrayed love story that I expect to remember for years to come.
