Alan Ormsby and Jeff Gillen present Deranged, which recounts the story of Ed Gein, also known as the Plainfield Ghoul, whose crimes in the 1950s deeply disturbed small-town communities. While some names were altered, the film is presented within its historical context, and it’s undeniably a depiction of Gein and his disturbing actions. The movie functions as both a troubling and admirable work of art. Some moments have been embellished for artistic effect, but the fundamental nature of Gein's character and his mental instability are faithfully portrayed. Roberts Blossom portrays Gein—credited here as Ezra Cobb—a man so dependent on his mother that he’s unable to accept her death. This sets off a series of events involving grave robbing, unsettling environments, and murder. Despite its limited budget, Gillen and Ormsby successfully avoid the pitfalls of cheap exploitation filmmaking. The special effects by Tom Savini appear somewhat rudimentary when viewed through a modern lens, but the film is presented with style and professionalism. Featuring strong performances from Blossom, inventive camerawork, a dark sense of humor, and a restrained approach to crucial scenes, this is an excellent addition to the catalog of serial killer movies. It earns a rating of 7/10.
