Around the World in 196 Films Country: South Korea Film: Derailed Director: Lee Song Tae Rating: 4/5 [8/10] Derailed centers on four teenage runaways – Jin Il (Choi Min Ho), Ga Young (Jung Da Eun), Bong Gil (Lee Yoo Jin) and Min Kyung (Baek Soo Min) – attempting to survive life on the streets. While resorting to theft to obtain food and money, they steal a car belonging to Hyung Sik (Ma Dong Seok), who reacts negatively. After Ga Young is taken by Hyung Sik, Jin Il, Bong Gil and Min Kyung – now wanted by police – must do whatever it takes to retrieve her. Derailed isn’t typically the kind of movie I would choose; crime thrillers aren't usually my thing. I primarily watched this film to write some articles about Choi Min Ho, but I ended up liking it far more than I anticipated. The film is dark and gritty, creating a stressful atmosphere. The cast delivers impressive performances, drawing me into this difficult – and sadly, all too real for some teenagers – world. It kept my heart racing; I bit my lip and paused at times just to catch my breath. The pacing works well; it moves from scenes of the teens resting and seemingly managing despite their situation to a sudden upheaval of their entire existence. Seeing them struggle desperately to overcome each new challenge was deeply upsetting. This film is dark, bleak, and painful. I felt tremendous sympathy for these characters, found myself crying at certain points, and couldn’t get enough or finish it quickly enough. The characters are compelling; Seong Hoon (Kim Jae Young) completely surprised me, and even days after watching the movie, I still frequently think about him and what shaped his character. Lee Sung Tae, who wrote and directed the film, did a wonderful job; I’m definitely interested in seeing more work from most of the actors involved – this film has easily made me a fan. I'm looking forward to seeing what Sung Tae does next and plan to watch his other films to discover what else he can offer. Overall, Derailed was an excellent film, and I am eager to explore more from those who contributed to it.
