I’ve been paying attention to Jake Gyllenhaal's career and he consistently delivers impressive performances in his movies. He ranks among the five finest actors of our time. So I generally like all of his films, particularly those from recent years—it’s hard not to if you appreciate compelling narratives and strong acting. I anticipated this would be another standout film, and it was, though not quite as exceptional as I'd hoped. He delivers what his fans and moviegoers want, and he follows through on that promise. Even a fairly standard film can become elevated simply because of his involvement, alongside the talented director. The story centers around a man who experiences the loss of his wife in a car crash. The film explores how he processes this grief. He comes to realize he’s incapable of feeling anything when those around him are grieving, so he embarks on an unusual quest to find answers and that's where the strange journey starts. The acting was solid overall, but it really revolved around Gyllenhaal's character. I appreciate Naomi Watts’ work, but she seemed older than usual this time. The supporting cast didn’t have much screen time, with the exception of a newcomer who performed adequately. I don’t believe everyone will connect with it; it presents an odd story about an unusual individual, so some people may find it difficult to grasp. You need to be prepared for a slower pace, and it's also a dark comedy. The film offers a peculiar explanation for its title, ‘Demolition,’ which is quite fitting. It’s not essential viewing, but definitely worth seeing for Gyllenhaal alone. I can’t imagine how it could have been improved; everything felt as good as it could be. 7/10
