Richard Burton and Jean Simmons declined to participate in this follow-up to "The Robe," yet director Delmer Daves assembled a cast including Susan Hayward, and thankfully kept Jay Robinson on board—his over-the-top performance helps make this sword and sandal film tolerable. As you might remember, “Demetrius” (Victor Mature) was there at the crucifixion and now possesses the red robe used during that event. It’s considered valuable to Christians, but when Caligula (Robinson) learns of its supposed healing abilities, he orders it be located. The resulting search leads to "Demetrius" being returned to slavery, this time working for Messalina (Hayward), who is married to Emperor Claudius' uncle (Barry Jones). She becomes attracted to this attractive man, but his religious beliefs make him resistant to her advances. However, she’s resourceful and engineers a tragic situation designed to bring the angry hero into her grasp. Will it work? With the increasingly volatile emperor constantly clashing with everyone—even his Praetorian Guard—will anyone survive? There's a suggestion of biblical influence in the storyline, but ultimately this is just another chance for Hayward and Mature to provide us with a vibrant romantic action adventure – and they do so adequately. It’s visually striking and moves along at a good clip, though the writing feels somewhat uninspired, which could induce drowsiness even in tigers that appear to keep breathing despite numerous stab wounds. Mature's acting is rather stiff throughout—so don't anticipate much emotional depth, but if you enjoy this type of movie, then the lavish costumes, silks, and gladiatorial contests almost make it worthwhile.
