It's a wild and crude diversion, certainly. As British magazine Radio Times pointed out, those who are easily shocked or faint of heart might find Crank to be just that—a violent and vulgar distraction. However, it’s completely insane fun, and the film itself is fully aware of this, as are its star Jason Statham, directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, and pretty much any fan of action movies. The humor is obvious, with a tongue firmly planted in cheek, and the movie's purpose is to give you an unbelievable thrill ride, which it manages to do quite well. The story isn’t really important here; instead, Statham’s character has been given a Chinese drug that will kill him if his adrenaline levels decrease. So he sets off looking for revenge—and possibly an antidote. He runs, jumps, takes drugs, has public sex with Amy Smart, rides a motorcycle like Evel Knievel, frequently exposes his rear end, and experiences a significant physical reaction. Like the film itself, he never stops moving; it’s all very fast-paced and energetic. The filmmakers seem to be acting like kids in a candy store, using every flashy trick available in action movies, but who cares? Grab a drink, get some snacks, and enjoy what is one of the best action movie experiences of 2006. It earns an 8/10.
