The film centers on two Jewish brothers, "Tuvia," portrayed by Daniel Craig, and "Zus," played by Liev Schreiber, who are guiding a disorganized band of people fleeing from the Nazis into a remote area of the Belorussian forest. Struggling with limited supplies and weaponry, their goal is to establish some form of protection against the approaching winter while searching for assistance to ensure their survival. The difficulties are immense, given the sheer number of people needing sustenance, which puts considerable strain on everyone's beliefs and the leader’s resolve as he finds himself increasingly clashing with his more assertive brother. Eventually, "Zus" makes the decision to depart and join a nearby Red Army unit, leaving "Tuvia" and another brother, "Asael," (Jamie Bell) facing a serious crisis compounded by sickness and hunger. The writing isn't particularly strong, and Craig’s performance doesn’t stand out either. However, director Edward Zwick succeeds in conveying a palpable sense of desperation through the setting – the thick forest, snow, wind, darkness, and even the wolves. It depicts ordinary people reduced to a life barely above that of animals, confronting an enemy determined on a senseless campaign of destruction. Tomas Arana delivers a commendable performance, though limited, as the Soviet commander who is wary of his Jewish companions—people historically excluded from military service—and who appears to be someone whose trustworthiness should be carefully considered. To offer some relief, Bell’s character receives a small amount of romantic attention during the cold evenings when the fires are low. The narrative explores themes of collaboration and demonstrates another highly effective tactic used by their adversaries to suppress a population ill-prepared for such precarious circumstances. While the movie feels drawn out—a reduction of roughly thirty minutes wouldn't harm the storyline—it is still worth seeing; you might want to have a blanket handy.
