GenerationofSwine on Defending Your Life

I recall being quite young, maybe around twelve, and waking up very early—the Chicago Tribune TV Guide was instrumental in those kinds of endeavors—to tape this off HBO. Almost immediately after starting the recording, I dozed off on the couch and had a bizarre dream that stuck with me throughout my childhood, all because of the film’s title. It wasn't connected to the movie itself; I just haven't forgotten it. So, I'm going off on a tangent here. But seriously, there is a point to be made, a lesson to learn, though that isn't really why you watch it. And when I was younger, I didn’t record it for any deeper meaning. You tune in because Albert Brooks is amusing, and the film seems whimsical and cheerful. And truthfully, it lives up to expectations. It’s one of those increasingly uncommon movies that tells you exactly what kind of experience it will be, promises a satisfying conclusion, and then follows through. There aren't many unexpected turns; you likely know how things will end before the movie even begins, and you're watching it primarily because you want to see that particular type of story. It’s enjoyable in an offbeat, understated kind of way. It pulls you into a pleasant little world, and it fulfills all the promises made in the advertising, offering comedy, romance, and a happy resolution. Anything beyond that is just extra.
