This movie turned out to be unexpected. Given that it was rooted in a true story, I appreciated the lack of emphasis on heroism—something many films of this type rely on to connect with audiences. The filmmakers seemed content simply to recount what occurred, resisting the urge to manufacture heroes or villains. However, the casting choices did create an odd impression; Mark Wahlberg appears to be the focal point, and there’s a portrayal of a negative character that feels somewhat unsupported by evidence. If the film accurately reflects events, then it seems any individual involved was blameless—likely the result of a technical failure pushing someone beyond their capabilities. The story unfolds on April 20, 2010, roughly 60 kilometers off the southern coast of the United States in the Gulf of Mexico. A new team arrives to continue deep-sea drilling as part of an oil exploration project. They believe they’ve made a significant discovery, but it proves to be a setback. Minor mistakes accumulate, culminating in a catastrophic incident; despite their best efforts, the crew is unable to contain it. Ultimately, survival becomes the priority over saving the drilling platform. The film then depicts the unfolding of what became one of the most substantial human-caused disasters in recent history, filled with action sequences. Coming from the director of 'Lone Survivor,' his involvement was commendable. It shares thematic similarities with films like 'The Finest Hours.' The movie’s development drew heavily from published articles and received Academy Award nominations in two categories, though it didn't secure any wins. The visual effects were crucial to this kind of film, and I found them impressive. Credit is due for reconstructing the event so that people can understand what really happened.
