The film promotes itself as an erotic thriller, but it’s missing what makes those genres work. Adrian Lyne attempts a return to filmmaking after twenty years, though the script by Zach Helm and Sam Levinson has too many issues. The main characters are truly unpleasant people in a deeply unhealthy relationship that's difficult to endure; however, their absence of character growth and nonexistent story progression results in a repetitive, predictable plot with little excitement. The disorganized handling of supporting roles and side stories adds to the script’s failings, to the point where even a conventional final act is missing. Ultimately, Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas deliver decent performances, which provides something positive to take away from it. Rating: D
