Money is clearly the only thing that matters here! What sort of worldview is that? A group of contemporary pirates targets an expensive cruise ship with plans to steal everything they can find. But upon boarding, the liner seems completely empty; any sign of people has mysteriously disappeared. It turns out some bizarre sea creatures have gone wild and now the pirates are on their own list for dinner! "Deep Rising" makes no attempt to be anything other than what it is: a wildly over-the-top "B" movie action film with monsters and guns, delivered with a knowing wink. The tagline “Full Scream Ahead” suggests this isn’t a film meant to be taken seriously in the slightest. From writer and director Stephen Sommers ("The Mummy"), "Deep Rising" combines elements of "Alien," "Poseidon Adventure," and "Under Siege," all structured around the framework of "Ten Little Indians." There's plenty of blood, jokes, and jump scares—the film doesn’t disappoint when it comes to classic horror thrills. The actors throw themselves into their roles with enthusiasm; Treat Williams, Famke Janssen (who manages well amidst a lot of male energy), Anthony Heald, Kevin J O'Connor, Wes Studi, Djimon Hounsou, and Jason Flemyng are also in the cast. It’s chaotic and wildly entertaining out on the ocean. 7/10
