A psychic’s death after encountering the thoughts of a dangerous killer puts Marcus Day in the position of sole witness, prompting him to search for the perpetrator. He soon discovers that this killer is following his every move and threatening anyone who attempts to assist with his inquiries. Dario Argento's Deep Red, also known as Profundo Rosso or The Hatchet Murders, holds a deserved place among the most significant films in the Giallo genre. Argento plunges Marcus Day, portrayed by David Hemmings—who seems to draw inspiration from his role in Blow Up—into an exciting and intense narrative of murder and intrigue, inviting the audience along for the ride. No matter the time, a sense of dread permeates Argento’s film. The mystery itself is well-crafted; even those seeing it for the first time might have a chance to piece things together early on. The film is presented with vibrant colors, and Argento incorporates numerous stylish scenes, using children's toys and mannequins to amplify the unsettling atmosphere. While the musical score isn’t consistently successful, the recurring theme involving children is particularly effective. On the downside, the dubbing quality is frequently questionable, and some of the well-known murder scenes approach comedic territory due to their extended length. Despite a few minor issues, Deep Red proves to be an engaging and visually impressive experience. It earns a rating of 7.5 out of 10.
