It’s disappointing because director Mimi Leder seemed unable to commit to a clear vision, resulting in an awkward combination of science fiction and family drama weighed down by numerous sentimental storylines. Téa Leoni portrays a news reporter tasked with looking into the abrupt departure of a high-ranking American official—played by James Cromwell—and uncovers that a comet, identified a year prior, is headed toward Earth. President Morgan Freeman persuades her to delay publicizing this information while they work on their strategy: a collaborative Russian-American spacecraft named "Messiah," intended to redirect the massive rock away from its destructive trajectory. Robert Duvall brings some weight to his role as the ship’s navigator, but otherwise, despite an impressive ensemble cast—including Maximillian Schell, Jon Favreau, a young Dougray Scott, and Vanessa Redgrave in the part of her mother—the actors don't leave much of a mark. The special effects are well-done, though I imagine everyone hoped they wouldn’t have to reshoot those final moments!
