An Astronomy club at a high school notices something unusual in space, and their teacher investigates, becoming concerned by what he uncovers, leading to a change in direction for the story. It's not terrible, especially considering this is the movie that popularized "E.L.E/Extinction Level Event" and brought public awareness to threats originating from outer space. Following that, apparently unconnected incidents draw the focus of an inexperienced television journalist, which eventually results in a cooperative mission to near-space on par with Apollo-Soyuz. The cast is full of well-known actors, but they don’t seem to be pushed very far, even though people are separated into two groups by chance selection. Despite this, the theme of family takes a prominent place—appearing in various forms, from fractured relationships to traditional families and new additions to existing ones. Thankfully, viewers weren't hit with the excessive displays of masculinity seen in "Armageddon," but instead experienced an unusual interpretation of “Moby Dick.” Morgan Freeman’s portrayal of “President Tom Beck” evokes a sense of “Abraham Lincoln” within this film, which is why I choose to watch it when it’s on television, even though I own the DVD. 8/10;)
