Can you meet me where I am? Decoy comes from director Jack Bernhard and screenwriter Nedrick Young, who adapted a story by Stanley Rubin. The film features Jean Gillie, Robert Armstrong, Herbert Rudley, Sheldon Leonard, and Edward Norris. Edward J. Kay composed the music, and L. William O’Connell was in charge of cinematography. Margot Shelby (Gillie) is found on the sofa, apparently having suffered a gunshot wound. Sgt. Jo Portugal (Leonard) bends closer to hear how she ended up in this predicament… Manic, delirious, crazy, unpleasant—Decoy embodies all these qualities and more, wonderfully so. Clocking in at less than 80 minutes, this low-budget noir from Monogram tells a harsh story of greed, fatalism, and ruthless murder, driven by one of the most heartless women ever to wear high heels. The plot centers around money, naturally; there’s a large sum buried somewhere, and Margot Shelby wants it. The complication is that her criminal boyfriend, Frank Olins (Armstrong), is facing execution and isn't sharing the location of the loot. That doesn’t deter Margot, who uses her charm to manipulate two men into helping her, then brings Frank back from the dead to reveal where the money is hidden. Simple! As the opening scene demonstrates, we know Margot’s fate; what you aren’t prepared for are the lengths she'll go to achieve her goals, and her methods hit you hard. Even as death looms, she still wants to have the final cruel victory. Gillie delivers a truly memorable performance—it’s sad that she died three years later from pneumonia at just 33 years old. Elsewhere, Bernhard (who was married to Gillie at the time) is merely adequate as director, but alongside Gillie's exceptional acting, he also elicits a strong performance from Leonard. Kay’s music is uneven, even too lighthearted in certain scenes, and O’Connell’s photography is unremarkable, failing to create any particular atmosphere. You do need to put aside some of the sillier aspects and overlook moments that are unintentionally cheesy, but overall it's quite an experience. 7.5/10
