The arrival of Bart Allison will not soon be forgotten. Bart Allison and his loyal dog, Sam, arrive in Sundown searching for Tate Kimbrough. It seems that Kimbrough had an affair with Allison’s wife years before, an event that resulted in her suicide. Consumed by revenge and bitterness, Allison won't stop until he finds Kimbrough, but simply being present in Sundown will trigger consequences not only for him but also for the townspeople. Randolph Scott (Allison) and director Budd Boetticher created seven intriguing and intelligent Westerns together; each seemed to inspire the other. This film is a great example of their successful approach, as Decision At Sundown offers something different from typical Western stories. The plot is straightforward—a man seeking vengeance and a town controlled by dishonest people—but Allison isn’t acting rationally here. He's driven by anger and heartbreak; he doesn’t seem to care whether he lives or dies, only that he finds his target. It was also interesting to see how Allison’s presence affected Sundown, which made me consider later Westerns with supernatural elements. The ending avoids a predictable resolution and leaves you wanting more. Scott delivers an outstanding performance as Allison; his gray hair represents the wisdom he's lost due to his relentless desire for revenge, and there’s a mischievous look in his eyes. Scott is convincing portraying both rage and grief, which only strengthens his reputation as a superb actor in Western films. Noah Beery Jr (Sam) and John Archer as Dr. John Storrow also provide good support, but I didn't find the rest of the cast particularly impressive. The biggest flaw is that the villains are underdeveloped; they don’t go beyond being merely grumpy. John Carroll (Kimbrough) and Andrew Duggan as Sheriff Swede Hansen should have embraced more overtly villainous roles rather than playing them so subtly. Despite these minor shortcomings, this remains a very enjoyable film, one that holds up well on subsequent viewings and further establishes Boetticher and Scott’s place among the best in the genre. 7/10
