Kersey Chaos continues Michael Winner's series that stirred up Hollywood, following Death Wish. The story sticks to a predictable course; Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) has relocated to Los Angeles and is attempting to live an ordinary existence, but naturally, some delinquent young men enter his life after they’ve committed violent acts against people he cares about. The main issue with this film—and the reason some reviewers seemed genuinely upset afterward—is that the initial portion feels like pure exploitation, even though the production quality isn't bad. Was another depiction of sexual assault truly necessary? Couldn't it have involved a murder instead? There’s a point where it seems gratuitous. It makes you wonder if Winner ever considered asking Charles Bronson and Jill Ireland (who plays Bronson’s girlfriend) about a nude scene, though I suspect that conversation might have resulted in a physical altercation. When Kersey (Bronson is tough as always) starts enacting his version of justice, the movie finds its footing, playing with viewers' feelings—eliciting moral outrage or perhaps encouraging them to imagine themselves in a similar situation. Vigilante movies are inherently controversial, sparking anger and passionate arguments across the political landscape, but it’s better that they exist to generate discussion than not. Isn’t it? This isn't a sophisticated production by any means, but it deserves its respectable rating on IMDb. It has the potential to shock, irritate, disappoint, and even cause unintentional laughter (three of the rapists perform an incredibly silly dance), but it won't go unnoticed, and people are still discovering it today. Michael Winner clearly retains the talent to capture attention with his vigilante series. 6.5/10
