_Beyond Anarchy_ manages to offer some entertainment value. It resembles _Escape from LA_ more than the earlier _Death Race 2000_, and it does belong within the franchise, which highlights the central issue with _Beyond Anarchy_: Does it truly qualify as a _Death Race_ film? The response is affirmative, but it prompts another question: Should it have been one? The likely answer to that is no. I mentioned earlier that I enjoyed watching the movie, however, certain elements consistently detracted from it—its hesitant and superficial connections to previous films in the series. If those references had been entirely disregarded, the overall experience might have been improved; but then, could it still be considered _Death Race 4_? Conversely, a different approach might also have succeeded, crafting a genuine sequel that builds upon _Death Race 3_ and earlier installments in a logical fashion. But if it had done so, it wouldn't resemble the film we received at all. What we ultimately get is _Beyond Anarchy’s_ peculiar position as a sort of sequel-in-between, a movie I don't regret having seen, but which struggles to satisfy both devoted fans of the _Death Race_ series and those unfamiliar with the franchise altogether. _Final rating:★★½ - It had aspects that appealed to me, but it didn’t fully coalesce._
