CinemaSerf on Death on the Nile

This adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel shares very little with the 1978 version starring Ustinov and Niven—a film that I genuinely appreciate. Sir Kenneth Branagh begins by showing us a bit about the detective’s sad experiences in World War One before introducing the newly married "Doyle" couple, played by Gal Gadot and Armie Hammer, his former girlfriend “Jackie” (Emma Mackey – who I honestly thought was Margot Robbie), and a group of other characters aboard the luxurious Nile paddle steamer "Karnak," where murder and chaos unfold. The production values are high; it’s visually appealing. However, I felt that the characters were rather lifeless. There are recognizable actors present, but they don't feel like major stars, and we learn very little about the suspects' personalities or motivations. Tom Bateman returns as "Book" from Sir Kenneth’s previous “Poirot” film from 2017, which feels a bit too contrived. The movie lacks humor, and while I initially liked the 1930s Blues music, it eventually became distracting. Patrick Doyle’s score seemed unremarkable, bringing to mind "Kingdom of Heaven" (2005). Although there's plenty of filming on location, there's also a noticeable amount of CGI. Sir Kenneth simply doesn't feel like Poirot to me; his portrayals always come across as overly theatrical—he needs to be the focus at all times. The film’s rhythm fails to build any real sense of dread, and while it’s certainly better experienced in cinemas, I was ultimately quite disappointed.
