A soldier dies during the Great War, but he negotiates with death for a chance to live again, on the condition that he gathers 10,000 shadows. This process requires him—played by Matthias Schoenarts—to capture images of people whose spirits he intends to exchange. As he nears his goal, he meets “Sarah” (Laura Verlinden), who is grieving for her lost love, “Daniel” (Benjamin Ramon). He learns that this young man died in a terrible way, but seeing how upset she is makes Nathan question whether his own return is truly the most vital thing to achieve in a world marked by war and suffering. The story isn’t easily grasped, and that lack of clarity contributes to its quiet thoughtfulness and deeply personal nature, set against a vast sense of loss, regret, and sacrifice. It's an attractively made film that deserves about twenty minutes of your attention.
