The Netflix adaptation of Death Note proved to be an unpleasant experience, despite my initial optimism. My husband and a friend who’s familiar with the anime gave up after just ten minutes, prompted by Light's high-pitched screaming. I felt compelled to finish it myself while doing other things, as if I had some sort of obligation. The only redeeming quality was Ryuk; even though they altered his detached perspective, the acting and visual effects were well done. However, everything else fell short. Instead of portraying Light as an exemplary student who is well-regarded by everyone, he came across as a petulant, emotionally unstable teenager with numerous problems. Mia, cast in Misa’s place, lacked the sweetness, naivete, intelligence, and unwavering loyalty that defined her original character; she was simply unlikeable. I consistently found myself supporting L, but these characters are supposed to be the story's heroes, and unlike the source material, there wasn't a single thing about them that I could appreciate or respect. The level of violence also felt out of place. Death Note is typically presented as a restrained thriller where deaths occur through natural causes like heart attacks, implied suicides, or accidents; this version, however, includes shocking and graphic deaths reminiscent of Final Destination.
