Kamurai on Death at a Funeral

7/10 · Sep 22, 2020

It’s a genuinely enjoyable film that I’d happily watch again and suggest to others. This is a reimagining of the 2007 "Death at a Funeral," which was originally British, while this one is an American production with a Black cast. It felt like a significant challenge to live up to the original, coming only three years after its release. What’s remarkable is how closely it follows the plot of the first film; they even managed to get Peter Dinklage back in his initial role—a fairly uncommon occurrence in Hollywood. This raises the question of why Alan Tudyk, who is also American and was a standout in the original for me, wasn't brought back. James Marsden attempts to bring something new to the part, but it seems he’s largely mirroring Tudyk’s performance. Luke Wilson takes over the Scottish character’s role, and he’s the only other white actor in the cast, which speaks volumes about how British people view Scots—it's a silly thing; everyone should get along better. The ensemble is terrific: Zoe Saldana, Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Danny Glover (who was my favorite), Tracey Morgan, Kevin Hart, and Keith David. They all deliver excellent performances, even those I wasn’t as familiar with. So, the remake earns points for its casting choices and the larger-than-life personalities it features. The film has a lighter feel and is more playful with the characters, but at its core, it's still the same hilarious story. You might not fault yourself for choosing one version over the other, however I still prefer the original, largely because of Alan Tudyk.
